Design Matrix: Elements of Art and Principles of Design

Elements of Art and Principles of Design

What will we learn from this lesson?

1. When artists work with the Elements of Art (line, shape, form, value, texture, space, and color) decisions must be made about how these elements should be arranged.
2. An effective work of art will have a thoughtful arrangement of these elements to create harmony and unity in the piece.
3. When planning art, the first thing to do is to prepare the artwork's composition. Composition is the plan of how the elements and principles will work together to make visually successful art.
4. In the Design Matrix assignment you will be presented with many possibilities and small problems in design composition.
~The more practice you have thinking about and arranging the elements and principles of design, the more comfortable you will be when you compose your own works of art.

Design Matrix Process:

1. Use a pencil to lightly experiment with solving each square in the matrix.
2. Avoid simple solutions. Be creative and unique!
  • Think about how the artwork would look enlarged. Would it stand out as an artwork on it's own?
3. Make each square entirely different than the others.
4. Finish with either a thin Sharpie, Colored Pencil, or pencil.
  • Line, Shape, and Texture rows MUST be finished with a thin Sharpie.
  • The color row MUST be finished with colored pencils.
  • Value rows can be finished in pencil or completed in thin sharpie if you are confident in your pen and ink skills.
5. MAKE SURE your neatness and craftsmanship are excellent!
